Higher Education Compliance
- What Governing Boards Really Need to Know

President Kennedy did not tell NASA how to design the spaceship to put the United States astronauts on the moon. Instead, his words inspired NASA and the country to develop a plan—a plan to put a man on the moon in that decade. Implementing a compliance initiative is not easy. Neither was going to the moon but it is a task that your institution and Board can and should accept.

Board members will learn:

  • How Boards can inspire and support institutional efforts to develop a compliance initiative.

  • Basics of a compliance initiative to understand the necessity for this program at your institution.

Editorial Reviews

“Understanding and addressing an institutions compliance profile is critical in today’s higher education environment. This book provides Board members foundational information which enables them to complement the work of the institutions administration”.
Steven Fulkerson, former Board of Regents, Eastern Kentucky University

“Judy makes ‘compliance’ understandable and accessible to the reader. This book clearly lays out the Board’s role in compliance - suggesting structure, actions, and questions to be asked. The book is an excellent tool for both presidents and boards who want a road map to tackle compliance in higher education and is an excellent addition to her first book, Higher Education Compliance: Blueprint for Success, written for institutional personnel”.
Dr. Susanna Baxter, President, LaGrange College

Compliance Risk assessments
- an introduction

Risk assessments are the heart of an effective compliance and ethics program. They help build the framework around which your program will operate. With them, you can create a system that not only finds compliance issues, but also works to keep those issues from happening. Without them, you’ll only be reactive.

With Compliance Risk Assessment: An Introduction, you’ll learn about the nature of risk and how compliance risk management differs from other forms of risk management. You’ll learn to define your organization’s compliance risk universe and how to assess and address those risks. This book covers each step of the process and how they feed into a functioning compliance and ethics program. It also outlines common pitfalls and ways to build toward continuous improvement.

Higher Education Compliance
- Blueprint for Success

Rapidly changing laws and an evolving student and faculty population make compliance with the myriad of federal and state laws and institutional policies an increasing challenge. Campuses must rise to this challenge by developing an effective compliance program. There remains one major barrier--the overwhelming confusion experienced by campus professionals thrust into a compliance role.

In Higher Education Compliance you will learn the following:

  • How to build a robust compliance initiative supported by your institutional leaders

  • How to develop, implement, and  monitor a compliance program

  • How to mitigate risk and avoid being tomorrow's headline scandal

Editorial Reviews
"Spain's handbook gives a step-by-step process for launching and maintaining a successful program in an easy-to-follow format. If you have been contemplating instituting a compliance program, start by reading this book."
Mary Gawlicki, former trustee and board audit and compliance committee chair, Manhattanville College

"With the clarity and succinctness of the master teacher she is, Dr. Judy Spain has written a nuanced explanation of the why and a guide to the how of compliance. In today's environment, this is a very important read.”
Dr. Doug Whitlock, president emeritus, Eastern Kentucky University

Compliance perspective Assessment

Judy Spain is a professor emeritus, Business law at Eastern Kentucky University, Compliance Collaborative Program Consultant with the Georgia Independent College Association, and, most importantly for this conversation, the author of the book Compliance Risk Assessments: An Introduction, which was just published by SCCE and available for sale on both the SCCE and HCCA websites.

In this podcast we review the changing importance of the concept of risk and risk management, which Judy argues, has moved from an insurance-based approach for mitigating damage after an event to a more proactive one designed to prevent the problem in the first place.

She also discusses:

  • The need to stop and think, rather than to react

  • The importance of making ethics a part of the compliance risk assessment

  • The value of including multiple voices in the risk assessment process

  • Knowing your goal before starting

  • The steps involved in getting the assessment done right (which are outlined in great detail in the book)

  • Understanding that not every risk has the same impact

  • The central role of prioritization

  • And much, much more

To learn more, listen in on the podcast and then enjoy a preview of Understanding Compliance Risks Assessments on Cosmos, our digital publishing platform.
